A female gray wolf at rest. They don’t have the same mind chatter that we do.

Puff is actually a magic dragon disguised as a well mannered house cat.

wind spirit

A spirit wolf. Healer to man. She travels silently and restores spiritual and physical balance.

In the background I painted a medicine shield….befitting a healer. The gold spirals are a symbol for the path of life. Sometimes I know what the entire painting will include before I begin. But, more often than not, I ‘doodle’ my way the the finish. The subject most often tells me what to paint….especially after I finish the eyes. No rhyme or reason to this. I have learned…. and long ago…not to angst over the painting. That way I don’t paint it to death. I would say it’s a big no no when using watercolor.

Cats large or small share the predatory instinct. This one calls the jungle home, but only its size distinguishes it from its smaller domestic cat cousin. Fierce hunter.

the touch

Ever wish that you could touch a wild animal. I don’t mean one in captivity, but a really wild one. It’s next to impossible because you need the consent of the wild thing. They have fear just like we do. I was visiting Fire Island off Long Island and I touched a wild deer that walked up to me. Now I don’t know if this really counts because those deer are protected on the island and have learned not to fear humans. It was still a rush for me.

A decidedly pensive cat. Born in a pumpkin patch on the eve of Samhain. She is a light into the darkening season.

flies silently

A few days ago we experienced a very fierce rain that lasted for a day. On the day before the storm I was walking with my dogs at the lake. Foggy mists were floating and moving over the lake and the surrounding mountains. Very beautiful. Very still. So quiet. As I stood on a hill by the water, breathing in the lake four great blue herons flew out of the mists. They circled and swooped for quite a long time…… never touching down. They looked like prehistoric birds in their flight. It was very mystical.

gyp

The Ket, a tribe of central Siberia, regarded the bear as their ancestor. They prayed to the spirit of the bear and referred to the bear as gyp, “grandfather.”

blue moon

Once in a blue moon a cat of unusual color is born of a regular cat. Really!  I have a friend whose female golden retriever Daisy mated with a male golden . Both were the same red/gold color. When Daisy gave birth the first pup to come was pure black. Beautiful pup and full golden. All the rest of the litter were red/gold. Once in a blue moon.
