One thing to remember is to talk to the animals. If you do, they will talk back to you. But if you don’t talk to the animals, they won’t talk back to you, then you won’t understand, and when you don’t understand you will fear, and when you fear you will destroy the animals, and if you destroy the animals, you will destroy yourself.

The raven in this painting is what is called a ‘Spirit Raven.’ It is found mainly in British Columbia. Very rare bird. I personally love genetically white birds and animals. They seem sacred and of course Native Americans regard the Spirit Raven as sacred.
The common raven has a 4 ft wingspan and is over two feet from head to tail. The raven is often misidentified as a crow – a closely related bird. Ravens are uncommon in populated urban areas. If you see a “really big crow” in the city, the chances are good that it really is a crow and not a raven.
Ravens soar more than crows. If you see a “crow” soaring for more than a few seconds, take another look – it might be a raven. Common Ravens can do a somersault in flight and even fly upside down. Ravens are longer necked in flight than crows.

I know that I am dating myself, but do you remember that early sit/com “Bewitched?” I think it was Elizabeth Montgomery who played the lead witch “Sabrina.” I don’t know where my mind pulled that from but that’s how I named Ms. cat. I most often have titles pop into my head during some part of the process of painting.

Ted liked his fresh kill so much that he would wait in a snow bank for prey. A real mounain cat. Neither rain nor snow nor sleet….as they say about the postal service.

The white lion is a sacred symbol of a higher promise just like the white buffalo and yet they are facing extinction. I included the totem of the dragonfly which symbolizes the opening of one’s eyes and the ability to see beyond the limitations of the human. So Wake Up!

If you have ever been around horses, I know that you have been around flies. We had a heating up of the weather today. Very nice, but all these little tiny flies appeared. While I was painting this horse the flies were buzzing up my nose, in my ears and eyes and every other place they could find. Painting, needless to say was quite difficult. I finally took my painting to the bathroom and finished it in there with no flies. I know they drive the horses crazy and the ones that also bite attack the horses. Ah….a lesson in compassion.
