I took the dogs to the Lake at 7am today due to the extreme heat that we have been having here in southern California. There was friend Heron wading around amongst the fishermen attempting to catch his share of the lake trout. Always nice to see him.

She has lived many seasons. She has perfected the art of fishing, camouflage and the fight. She wades slowly through the foggy marshes occasionally imparting her ancient knowledge to a young and sometimes foolish bird.

Heron teaches to be still and wait for what we need to come to us. This heron was disturbed by Maus yesterday. Wading in the shallows undoubtedly in an excellent fishing place he took to the bare and tangled branches above the beach. The sight was anything but graceful with wings and legs grabbing to stay perched. There he waited where he finally let some loud caws and flew away over the lake.  I have never seen one fly upward to perch. He must have been stalking something important to wait like that.

The thing about big dogs with no yard is that you must  walk them twice a day. And it doesn’t matter what kind of weather is happening. That’s where I was this morning. It was ‘pea soup’ fog at the lake and raining. This is the kind of day that brings the Great Blue Herons close to shore. They must think that we can’t see them. Well there aren’t many people out on a rainy day to see them. I guess they are more confidant. One of the big guys was standing in the shallows and he had his head pulled way down into his  feathers. Everything including the bird was grey. I stood there for a long time watching him. My dogs apparently thought it wasn’t worth the chase and they left him alone. So it was an eye feast for me. He never moved.

Great Blue Herons wade silently in the shallows of a body of water…waiting for a catch. Then suddenly, quickly and as impressively as their silence they strike and pull up a fish. I am always so delighted to see this action or even to watch one of them frozen when waiting for prey to swim their way.

A few days ago we experienced a very fierce rain that lasted for a day. On the day before the storm I was walking with my dogs at the lake. Foggy mists were floating and moving over the lake and the surrounding mountains. Very beautiful. Very still. So quiet. As I stood on a hill by the water, breathing in the lake four great blue herons flew out of the mists. They circled and swooped for quite a long time…… never touching down. They looked like prehistoric birds in their flight. It was very mystical.
