musk deer

There is a beautiful story about the musk deer that prompted me to paint this deer. It goes like this…. The musk deer became aware of an exquisite scent which stirred him to the depths of his soul. Now, a powerful longing arose within his heart making him determined to find the source of the scent. He searched everywhere desperately but with no discovery. Alas, after many years, he fell from a cliff one day and as his life came to its end, he realized that the sought after scent came from his own navel. He then experienced supreme peace. His journey was over. This also is a story about a seeker of God….life long searching and sacrificing, finally discovering that true peace, God is within himself.

Hawks as totem birds are mystical teachers known as messengers of the spirit world. The red-tailed hawk has ties to the kundalini or dormant spiritual energy in humans. It teaches us to balance psychic energies. Fearsome bird of prey.

Spirit Dancer is a favored war horse. Given her name because she seems to be guided by the unseen. Very gentle, agile of hoof and a bit smaller than other mares. Coup feathers have been braided into her jet black mane because she is about to go to war.

Named for the city Marrakech located in Morocco near the Atlas Mountains. Ahhhh….she is dreaming of a great feast. Savory chicken pie, Lamb with honey, beautiful spiced olives, fluffy couscous and,of course, steaming hot mint tea poured from a silver pot into tall clear glasses. She can just snooze on top of the rugs and pillows after she has eaten her fill. Eat on feline.

I have wanted to document a painting in progress for some time now. I finally made it. Hope you enjoy seeing the process below.

1. The pencil drawing done with a 5H pencil on a precut 300lb aceo card. I always keep my lines light and few as possible so that the pencil will not detract from the finished art.

2. I added background design with liquid mask. I use Masquepen with a super fine applicator made by that company out of the UK. After it is dry I start painting. The mask will keep the white where it was applied. After the painting is finished I remove the mask.

3. First wash. You can see how I painted right over the mask. It is a light blue.

4. Second wash and some detail.

5. Third wash and background.

6. Mask removed. And you can see that it has left the raw white paper unpainted.

7. I dropped in a bit of green on the leaves, added some last dark highlights and applied some dots of gold with a Pilot medium gold marker. I love the shade of gold in this pen. Every so often when I am looking for something fresh to do with my painting I go online and browse for some interesting new tool or pigment. One of these shopping trips turned up a bunch of gold pens. I often underpaint before using the mask. I didn’t think about that this time.

China Rose is sweetly dreaming in the sunshine. Of what her dreams are made of…..we will never know.

Within the Inuit Indian tribes the Great Spirit controlled the caribou and took the form of a huge, white bear. It was the Inuit  conjurer who had the power to influence that spirit to send deer to the Inuit when they were starving.

This is my first painting since moving. It was a difficult move and I still don’t have my studio organized much less….my life. But all is well and little by little things get organized. Love my studio.  I have ‘packed’ a big house into a very small space. The dogs and I are having personal space issues. Buddha especially seems to lie in the middle of all the narrow walk ways. He has a deck in the trees, but he is still confused by the transition. Maus has taken refuge on my bed. Oh well. More to come with photos. Just found my camera.

Three of the studio walls are windows and surrounded by giant cedars. When it snows this winter I will be seeing only snow on the cedars out my windows. I’m looking forward to being settled and painting more.
