Pinon Cat lives in the southwest of the USA. He was named for the Pinon pine trees which produce wonderful seeds that are very tasty. He siestas beneath the Pinon trees meditating on mouse sauteed in butter and olive oil with pinon seeds and red papers. Oh…A little white wine to deglaze.

I’ve been investigating colorful design backgrounds on black. It comes from my days of being a batik artist. I always used black as the final dye bath. It really set off the painting. I will just keep on going since I am having fun with this method. Maybe I’ll break out my jnanting tool for applying hot wax. Right now I am using liquid relief. It’s fun to experiment.

hari giri cat - age 10?

This is my cat, Hari Giri. He was named after an Indian Saint. He has since been given an alias ….Ted Bundy. Ted B. was the infamous serial killer. My Ted is an awesome killer of small mountain wildlife. He is a great cat. Very dog like. He managed all these years to evade the coyotes, so maybe he is immortal. The color black helps. I, however, prefer to paint white cats. Not only do I love white, but it makes it easier to paint a cat in watercolor. When my cats are white it leaves room for all sorts of background decorations.

I used to paint cute victorian houses many years ago when I lived in San Francisco. I haven’t done so years. I have always loved the rows of refurbished victorian buildings lining the streets of the city. They are often painted in bright and cheerful colors.

‘Rikka’ is a Japanese name meaning ‘lovely snow.’ This name conjures up in my mind’s eye a pure white cat laying on a snow covered tree branch. I can almost smell the snow as it softly falls in large flakes and hear the silence of the mountain cold.

‘Zeus’ is the Greek god of the sky. A powerful name for such a docile looking kitty. Maybe he is just digesting dinner eaten after a fierce hunt.

I started this piece during a snow storm and have taken forever to finish. Just couldn’t get into it after my initial painting session. I do like the finished product, but I’m not in love with it. I usually love the ones that just fly together. I almost always feel as though I labored too much over commissions. This piece is not over worked….it just feels like it from all the mental effort I put into it. The discoloration in the lower right corner is due to bad photography. The actual painting does not have this discoloration.

This is where it began in January 2011. I want to take evolutionary photos of a painting in progress. I will…but when I don’t know.

Mr. Boynton takes a break in the teachers’ lounge. He teaches mouse philosophy at the University of Feline Hunters.

Another cat in the garden. I wonder what is going through their minds when they are just this comfortable. Of course cats don’t have the same conflicts that we humans do.

I originally named this watercolor “Coyote Blessing.” I created it as a logo for “Laughing Coyote Spirit Medicines,” but another of my coyote creations was used instead. So I found this piece languishing in my portfolio. I had giclees made which are now for sale as well as the original. I actually added the poppy flower recently to cover up some paint splatters. It has nothing to do with the coyote, but I like it. It adds to the mystery of healing spirit coyote. Perhaps this coyote is from California where orange poppies grow in abundance on the hills in the north during the spring.

I can’t imagine that ‘Elsbeth’ is fond of her new Easter bow. But then, I dressed up my cat when I was very little. I have the photos and she didn’t look uphappy. She was even in my doll carriage. I have been told that my cat was very enduring about my playing doll with her. These cats….they do amaze you always.
