A few days ago we experienced a very fierce rain that lasted for a day. On the day before the storm I was walking with my dogs at the lake. Foggy mists were floating and moving over the lake and the surrounding mountains. Very beautiful. Very still. So quiet. As I stood on a hill by the water, breathing in the lake four great blue herons flew out of the mists. They circled and swooped for quite a long time…… never touching down. They looked like prehistoric birds in their flight. It was very mystical.

  1. This painting certainly has that magical feeling. The colour in the background as well as the four suns add to it. I love it.

  2. Thanks for commenting. I wish you could have seen the scene.

  3. Exquisite!
Are they four suns? Or perhaps the spirits of the four herons?

  4. Lovely powder down of bluish-gray nuances and rich depiction of the fully retracted neck.
Love your heron’s gentle thoughts, silently flying like golden bubbles, like illuminated disks.
Presumably, thinking of the four herons it met in the mystic atmosphere of the lake …

    • Thanks so much for the appreciation. A wondrous sight indeed. the actual herons are a slate blue, but I have used artist’s license and added multi colors. ♥ gretchen

  5. When I watch a heron fly over it seems mystical. Silent and full of grace. Nicely done.

  6. That is fascinating. I have never seen four together.
This portrait is beautiful, Gretchen. I like your color choices. This particular portrait looks as though he could turn his head at any moment.

    • Thanks so much, Leslie. Seeing all the wild birds at our lake is truly inspiring and I am grateful to have this experience. ♥ gretchen
