The mythical Japanese fox is Kitsune.  I always think Kitsune when I paint a fox. There are so many stories surrounding Kitsune who is immortal, magical, and a shapeshifter. No ordinary fox for sure and deeply entrenched in Japanese lore. When a kitsune shapeshifts into the form of a tree, a human or a second moon you might still discover him because of his ‘hoshi no tama’ which he must keep with him at all times. His hoshi no tama is a glowing ball or an iridescent gem which contains his soul. He must keep it with him because without it he will grow powerless and die. In human form, Kitsunes usually wear their hoshi no tamas as amulets, but in fox form, they carry the magical balls in their mouths or fasten them to their tails.

stands and waits

Standing in shallow water upon long thin legs. Standing and waiting for prey. Herons wait for their prey to come to them. They do not chase down their meal. Always works very well. I have spent hours watching herons standing and waiting. Not boring at all because I’m watching a master fisher. Make a noise and they are likely to take to the air and fly slowly and majestically away looking like a prehistoric reincarnation. A picture of Zen……so still and present. My dog Buddha tried but was never able to catch a heron. He used to crash through the underbrush toward the wader. No brainer. Buddha always lost. He was, however, a very excellent ground squirrel catcher. He would hug the ground and almost imperceptibly advance toward the squirrel colony. At a certain distance he would make his final thrust in a burst of speed. His technique was quite good and he occasionally succeeded in a capture.

‘God, whose love and joy are present everywhere, can’t come to visit you unless you aren’t there’…….Angelus Silesius – a German mystic and prophet of the ineffable.

There is no instruction book to tell you how to be invisible. The journey requires only Faith……not too many words.  I have been seeking invisibility my entire life. It’s a worthwhile path to peace.

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty

and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study

and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.

There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

orca love

watercolor 5 x 7 11/2018

This painting was a commission for marriage spirit totems. In the sketch I quickly drew some sea plants just to complete the picture which was really all about the sketch of the hummer and the orca. When a customer orders a commission I like to give them some idea of what I plan to paint. I ultimately left the idea of underwater because a hummingbird doesn’t fly in the sea. Then it was my new plan to get a bit magical with the two totems. Tibetian clouds did it for me and some gold paint. Definitely more to subject than the sea plants. She loved it.

If you are thinking that I have stopped painting….I haven’t. I’m having multiple health issues and have been for some time. My heart is not working properly and I spent some time in the hospital this December. I would love to paint with the vigor that I had before, but that is not in the cards. Actually I switched to the tiny aceo cards in about 2009. No more galleries or big works. The cards were selling well on ebay and they were much easier for me to handle. It took me awhile to get used to the tiny format but I have grown to love it. I so appreciate all the kind comments that all of you write about my art. It gladdens my heart to give joy through my art and I have no plans to stop. Just a little more slowly for me.

Many blessings, Gretchen

The Japanese word for fox is kitsune. In the Japanese culture foxes are celebrated as magical spirits somewhat as western faeries. They are also protected and revered for just the beautiful animal that they are. The name of this fox means ‘spirit.’ Foxes teach us that sometimes to see the truth we must disappear into the background and become invisible.

‘Animals share with us the privilege of having a soul’……Pythagoras

O’ Great Spirit

help me always

to speak the truth quietly,

to listen with an open mind

when others speak

and to remember the peace

that may be found in silence.

………Cherokee Prayer

I love coyotes. Perhaps it is their inquisitiveness most of all that I adore. I walk with my dogs every day in the Guadalupe Oak Grove wildlife preserve. My day is perfect when I have a coyote sighting and especially perfect when they follow me on the walk. These coyotes are quite small compared to the Mountain coyotes, but coyotes they are indeed. Makes me feel like I am running with wolves. Being with wild animals invokes the Cherokee prayer above. The wild things teach me stillness They take me to the depths inside myself where stillness abides. I am rejuvenated with great love. So, you see, coyote is truly my sensei, my teacher when we gaze into each other’s eyes.
