May we raise children

who love the unloved

things – the dandelion, the

worms and spiderlings.

Children who sense

the rose needs the thorn

and run into rainswept days

the same way they

turn towards sun…

And when they’re grown and

someone has to speak for those

who have no voice

may they draw upon that

wilder bond, those days of

tending tender things

and be the ones.

‘Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth’

…….Henry David Thoreau

I recently read that studies of brain activity in people after three days of being in nature revealed lower levels of theta activity. This suggesting that their brains had rested. I used to live on a mountain at 5000′ and when I drove up the mountain from the flat land below I noticed a significant change in my sense of well being after the 3000′ mark. I was not alone. My friends living on the mountain also experienced the same and we all were always reluctant to descend from our crow’s nest home. Visitors who came for a weekend were so different…..not relaxed. Their road rage came with them whereas those of us living there full time were relaxed…..at peace. So….I am a believer in the healing ways of nature.

During my travels within the internet I found the below diagram of wolf leadership. It speaks to me of the need for leaders to guide from a base of wisdom and not from greed, power, deceit…and any quality which does not put the welfare of the pack first. The wolf pack has it down. As humans is it possible for us to follow the example of the wolf pack?

“I give you this one thought to keep

I am with you still,

I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow

I am the diamond glints on the snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone –

I am with you still, in each new dawn.”

…….a Native American Prayer

This watercolor is a commission that I created for a beautiful Native American woman from one of the Klamath tribes. It depicts her relationship with her late brother. His manitou is the red tail hawk and hers is the wolf. Her story and her loving nature touched my heart. It was my honor to create this painting for her.

‘There is the world of the flesh, and there is the Spirit world. When the flesh is gone, the Spirit forever remains. Their voices speak to those who know how to listen. Wisdom is born in the heart, and then spoken.’

……wolf clan song

I adore the “howl.” Makes me feel primal. I once found a short recording of the “howl” while I was working on the internet. My dogs were laying on the floor next to me and they woke up and began their own primal howls making for a really delicious collaboration.

‘The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone.’

“We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be –the mythologized epitome of a savage ruthless killer – which is, in reality, no more than a reflected image of ourself.”

We reached the old wolf in time to watch the fierce green fire dying in her eyes. There was something new to me in those eyes, something known only to her and the mountains. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch. I thought that because “fewer wolves, more deer” that no wolves would mean hunter’s paradise, but after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view.

…….Aldo Leopold

Truly a profound teaching. I once was honored to be in the woods with a wild coyote as it died. It was deeply meaningful for me for I realized that we were one. The coyote and I spoke to each other with our eyes and spirit.
