“Silence is the absolute
poise or balance of
body, mind and spirit.”
………Ohiyesa
I discovered deep silence within me when, as a child, I became a solitary woods walker. I would disappear for the entire day into the woods so that I could live in Nature’s peace. Never was I disappointed. Stillness surrounded me and nourished my being. Sitting by the creek my mind disappeared into the song of the flowing stream. Having access to the stillness of Nature soothed my emotional pain. Today Nature is still my go to portal into the peace of the soul. I encourage anyone who has not experienced the forest as a healing tool to open to it. Travel there alone and with no devices and just breathe. Let your mind rest and feel the relief. You can choose what to focus on, and therefore what to be. You can choose to be your in-breath and out-breath. You can choose to listen with your whole being to the sound of the rain or the wind, and in some way to be one with the rain or the wind. Listening to sounds in this way can be very joyful. When you are in touch with these refreshing and healing elements, you are being, and not thinking.

We spend most of our time and energy in a kind of horizontal thinking. We move along the surface of things … but there are times when we stop. We sit still. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper……… James Carroll

When you run after your thoughts, you are like a dog chasing a stick: every time a stick is thrown, you run after it. Instead, be like a lion who, rather than chasing after the stick, turns to face the thrower. One only throws a stick at a lion once.…………Milarepa

I often ritually burn sage in my house. It clears energy and it heals your body/spirit. Whenever you are feeling taken over by negative emotions or thoughts smudging sage will restore all and you will feel protected. I don’t overthink the ritual so I have no rules. I like that way best. To disperse the smoke I use a hawk feather gifted to me by a beautiful soul …… a woodsman from the North Carolina mountains. He also taught me to surround my home with feathers so that the faeries would come. I never saw the faeries but I am sure they came and blessed my home. I also burn incense daily……nag champa and sandlewood. It makes a big difference. Home…peace…home.

Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he’s destroying is this God he’s worshiping.
…….hubert reeves
I number among the fortunate humans to have experienced the deep intimacy of the forests, lakes, streams and oceans. Is it any wonder that our species is blatantly destroying our beautiful gift of nature when they have not truly tasted that gift. How many spend time laying on their backs watching the vastness of the sky, listening to the birds calling, smell the richness of the soil. Too busy. Too busy following thoughts that lie to us telling us that whatever task or activity may be before us is more important than taking the moment to greet the day prayerfully or stop to assist one in need. Peace is already within us we have only to see.

“Just slow down.
Slow down your speech.
Slow down your breathing.
Slow down your walking.
Slow down your eating.
And let this slower, steadier
pace perfume your mind.
Just slow down…”
