O’ Great Spirit

help me always

to speak the truth quietly,

to listen with an open mind

when others speak

and to remember the peace

that may be found in silence.

………Cherokee Prayer

I love coyotes. Perhaps it is their inquisitiveness most of all that I adore. I walk with my dogs every day in the Guadalupe Oak Grove wildlife preserve. My day is perfect when I have a coyote sighting and especially perfect when they follow me on the walk. These coyotes are quite small compared to the Mountain coyotes, but coyotes they are indeed. Makes me feel like I am running with wolves. Being with wild animals invokes the Cherokee prayer above. The wild things teach me stillness They take me to the depths inside myself where stillness abides. I am rejuvenated with great love. So, you see, coyote is truly my sensei, my teacher when we gaze into each other’s eyes.

marriage totem blessing

Watercolor 5×7 2018

This was a commission for a wedding gift. Very interesting relationship ….a beaver with a snake. The beaver has a very grounded and industrious nature while a snake embodies cosmic consciousness and transmutation. I wonder how this couple’s marriage will evolve. I wish them harmony.

She lost herself in the trees

among the every-changing leaves.

She wept beneath the wild sky

as stars told stories of ancient times.

The flowers grew towards her light,

the river called her name

She could not live an ordinary life

with mysteries of the universe

hidden in her eyes.

Follow your dreams for they are whispers from your soul.

‘Heart’s Desire’ is a commission that I formed around a previous aceo painting. It is painted slightly larger which gives me the liberty to include more detail. There can only be so much included within a 2 x 3 art card so I like the larger size occasionally.

stands in the sacred circle

The Circle has healing power. In the Circle, we are all equal. When in the Circle, no one is below you. The sacred Circle is designed to create unity. The Hoop of Life is also a circle. On this hoop there is a place for every species, every race, every tree and every plant. It is this completeness of Life that must be respected in order to bring about health this planet.

‘A warrior’s strength is measured by the size of her heart. She is respectfully humble. She will stand with honor. She will fight with love. In the face of adversity and for the ones she loves, she will be a voice and a shield. She will be a beacon to light the way home for the old. she will gently make way for the young. She is a sister, mother, daughter, grandmother……….she is a warrior.’

The raven in this painting is what is called a ‘Spirit Raven.’ It is found mainly in British Columbia. Very rare bird. I personally love genetically white birds and animals. They seem sacred and of course Native Americans  regard the Spirit Raven as sacred.

The common raven has a 4 ft wingspan and is over two feet from head to tail. The raven is often misidentified as a crow – a closely related bird. Ravens are uncommon in populated urban areas. If you see a “really big crow” in the city, the chances are good that it really is a crow and not a raven.

Ravens soar more than crows. If you see a “crow” soaring for more than a few seconds, take another look – it might be a raven. Common Ravens can do a somersault in flight and even fly upside down. Ravens are longer necked in flight than crows.
