Story has it that the Buddha, embodied as a hare, threw himself in a sacrificial fire to the god Indra. He was rewarded with eternal life as the moon. There is also this little creature munching wild flowers with one eye toward predators. Here on the mountain it is parched in the summer. However there are lots of spots in the shade where these delicate wild flowers grow sparsely. Such an anomaly. It is so sweet to find these flowers blooming on a hot and dry summer day.

  1. That IS one fine bunny! Melts my heart! 🙂

  2. Beautiful story and painting! I JUST wrote a post on Rabbit symbolism yesterday – seems our bunny natures are in sync 🙂

    • Very nice post…yours on rabbit. It would seem that there are a lot of rabbits in stories telling a truth. Go bunny nature. There are no accidents are there?

  3. What a beautiful, wise bunny, so gentle and comfortable among the little mountain flowers. It is good to think that the Buddha, in the shape of the moon, watches over him, watches over us all.
    Thank you Gretchen.
    Karen.

    • I had never heard of this story about rabbit and Buddha. I liked it and made think differently about those ‘rascally rabbits.’

  4. What a darling bunny. I can’t help but smile at the sight of him.

  5. Thanks and I think he has an endearing expression also. I never know what I will get when I begin a painting.
