I rarely paint tropical birds. This one is a commission. I had a housecleaning client who had a solarium where he kept some very large parrots in some very large cages with their very large doors open. The birds hated me. I don’t think it was personal, but rather because I carried a hugh feather duster in my belt. One of them used to hide in closets and spring out at me. I had similar experiences with other parrots on my client list. I was bitten and attacked a number of times. To this day I give them a wide berth but I understand that their owners love them.

I stood beneath a very tall pine in the forest and watched a bald eagle just like this one. He was about 30 feet above perched on a limb and dining on his catch. From the feathers floating down I presume that the special menu of the day was wild fowl.

The raven is a bird of mysticism and magic. One of the myths surrounding the raven is that it stole the sunlight from one who would keep the world in darkness.

This raven has scavenged a shiny gold bell. Perhaps he is bringing it home to decorate the family nest.

I painted another snowy owl last year about this time. I called him “Hedwig.” I love the snowy owls and the barn owls. We have an owl close to our house…I have never seen him…who calls at night in the summer. Very nice to hear.
