This is not the first time I have painted a spirit bear. They are not polar bears or albino but rather a genetic off shoot of the black bear. They exist pretty much exclusively on the islands of British Columbia. I decided to paint this fellow today because I was reminded of these bears when asked to contribute the image of my first spirit bear painting for publication in an upcoming book. The book is a celebration of 3 sacred messengers:  White Lions, White Bison and the Spirit Bears. Proceeds will go to conservation.  I especially love to paint white animals. There is something mystical about them.

  1. Lovely news and painting, Gretchen.
I think they deserve to be treasured in a book as well as in nature.

  2. You make them magical. Are they associated with ghosts?

    • Not at all. Legends surrounding this mystical animal have been passed down by word for 10,000 years. It is said that when Raven created the world that he left spirit bear as a reminder of the time that snow and ice covered all. He is a symbol of the gifts from this earth. At this point in time only a few hundred live exclusively in the Great Bear Rain Forest.
