The thing about big dogs with no yard is that you must  walk them twice a day. And it doesn’t matter what kind of weather is happening. That’s where I was this morning. It was ‘pea soup’ fog at the lake and raining. This is the kind of day that brings the Great Blue Herons close to shore. They must think that we can’t see them. Well there aren’t many people out on a rainy day to see them. I guess they are more confidant. One of the big guys was standing in the shallows and he had his head pulled way down into his  feathers. Everything including the bird was grey. I stood there for a long time watching him. My dogs apparently thought it wasn’t worth the chase and they left him alone. So it was an eye feast for me. He never moved.

  1. Love the muted color, sets the mood, I can really imagine being there…
So you watched and then painted all from memory?

    • Yes. Since fog makes everything monochromatic I used artist’s license to enliven it a bit. When I repeatedly paint or draw a particular bird or animal I can reproduce from memory. I have also spent a considerable amount of time watching the herons.
